Saint-Bertrand de Comminges

Medieval city near Pyrenees

Mediaeval city of Saint Bertrand de Comminges

Your journey through time begins in the ancient Roman city of Lugdunum, the city of the Convenae.

Temple, forum, theatre, hot baths and busy marketplace still seem to ring to the cries of the five to ten thousand citizens who lived here on 30 hectares in the first half of the 2nd Century.

Don’t hesitate to pass through the great door of the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie de Saint-Bertrand de Comminges (11th - 12th Centuries).

You will find elegant Romanesque-Gothic architecture, Renaissance windows, carved choir-stalls and a remarkable 16th Century organ. You will also appreciate the peace and quiet of the 12th Century cloister.

Saint-Bertrand de Comminges was a stopover on one of the secondary pilgrims ways to St James of Compostela (the Piedmont Way), and the cathedral also contains the tomb of Bishop Bertrand de l'Isle who was canonised in the 13th Century.

The site of the Roman city (on the plain) and the mediaeval town are also well worth a visit.

You will enter the mediaeval city of Saint Bertrand de Comminges through one of its three gates. The half-timbered 15th and 16th Century houses show how prosperous the town was as an episcopal city.
